October 14, 2017 Membership Meeting Minutes

The meeting was held at the New Hampshire Veterans Home Tilton, NH.  Prior to the business meeting a tour of the Home was given by Jennifer Mitchell a Recreation Therapist at the Home.  It was very enlightening.

The business meeting was called to order by Commander Alan Heidenreich at 2:55 pm.  There were 12 members and 3 guests present.

All officers were present with the exception of Henry Donovan, James Slater and Mike Lopez who were excused.

The pledge of allegiance was conducted followed by moment of silence for our departed comrades especially Wilfred LeBlanc, a chartered member, who passed away on 7/27/17.

The Minutes of the previous meeting were presented and accepted.

The financial report, for the year to date, was presented indicating that the expenses of $536.99 and income from dues, donations and other (including $1201.00 from the Rose of Sharon fund raiser) gives a total of $1,239.01 to the good.

Membership and Dues: The Chapter membership stands at 41 of the 67 members paid for 2017.   It is now time to submit your 2018 dues for our new year begins on January 1, 2018.  Nine members have already paid up for 2018. Make your check out for $10 to NHKWVA and mail it to: NHKWVA, 177 Pako Ave., Keene, NH 03431.   There are also 7 members in the arrears for their National dues. Check your National membership card for your dues date and send the $25 to the National Office:  The Korean War Veterans Association Inc., P.O. Box 407, Charleston, IL 61920-0407

Vetflix:  The Vetflix program is still in the works for there is need of its financial report to be submitted.  The Chapter does not have any financial obligation to the program.

Bob Courtemanche mentioned that there will be a Veterans Day parade in Nashua and that it would be nice if members of the NHKWVA would like to participate. No walking, cars will be available.

It was announced that Wright Museum in Wolfeboro will be hosting in 2018 a special photographic exhibit called “The Forgotten War, Korea 1950”.  The 40 plus photos by the 1951 Pulitzer Prize winner Max Desfor will be on exhibit from June 24 to August 12, 2018. It was suggested that a letter be sent to the museum director, though we are not financially able to be co-sponsor, we would like to have at the opening, a representative present.

The Secretary/Treasurer made a request to have a member as a backup to signing the checkbook account if some reason something happens and he is not able to.   He also mentioned, in as much as he is holding two positions, that to reduce his work load it would be appreciated if someone would accept one of the positions.

The Chapter presented a check for $500 to the Home for the Resident Benefit Fund.  This is to provide quality life activities for the residents.

Robert Desmond announced that he had a few of the Korean War map available for $1 with the money going to the Chapter.

Secretary/ Treasurer Addendum to August 2017 Minutes

The October 14th meeting will be held at the NH Veterans Home in Tilton.  The meeting is scheduled for 2 pm with snacks beginning at 1 pm.  A 1:30 pm tour of the facility will be available to all who wish to participate.  This is a great opportunity to find out about the Veterans Home.  Please try to attend and invite a family member to join you.

The staff would like to know approximately how many will be on the tour in order to have the appropriate number of volunteer guides available, so please contact me prior to Wednesday, Oct.11th if you plan to do so.   603-352-5369 (Home), 603-209-1278 (Cell) or cjperreault@myfairpoint.net     Thanks

I realize that I am starting early but our Chapter membership year goes from January 1 to December 31.  For some reason this year the Chapter did not fair too well on dues, only approximately 60% of our members submitted their payment. The National KWVA is not like some of the veteran organizations who collect for both National and local, for the KWVA dues are all theirs and the Chapters have to set and collect their own.  The Chapter would like to see all our members pay for 2018 even if you might have forgotten about 2017.  All is forgiven.  The dues are only $10, make a check out to NHKWVA and send it to NHKWVA, 177 Pako Ave., Keene, NH 03431.    The following have already submitted their dues for 2018: Paul Harris, Larry Sinclair, Robert Desmond, Terrence Connors, Rose Connors-Allard, Paul White, Palmer Porter, Roland Stoodley and Donald Buskey.

According to the National KWVA five of our members are in the inactive category.  Check your membership card for your anniversary date.  They should have been sending you notification.

Keep your memberships up and help to recruit new members.

Reports:

Membership: There are 40 paid Chapter members for the year with 26 unpaid.  Also, there are 4 who need to send in their National dues.  Since our inception 21 of our members have gone to their last muster.  Financial aid is available from an anonymous donor.  Contact Conrad – all matters are confidential.

Discussion followed in regards to new members.  There are still many Korean War Veterans and many Korean Defense Veterans that we need to encourage joining.  The question arose in regards to joining the Chapter without joining the National Organization.  It was pointed out that in as much as we are chartered through National, that their bylaws and the Chapter’s bylaws state that our members must also be members of the National KWVA.

Chapter Name Change: It was pointed out that in the May-June Graybeards the amount of work that is involved in a chapter name change.  Commander Heidenreich will look into seeing if we could keep the name as is but, indicate it to be in honor of.

October Meeting: The holding of the next meeting is to be on October 14th, the second Saturday.  There will be an attempt to hold the meeting at the Veterans Home in Tilton. If unable to do so it will be at the Sweeney Legion Post.  An announcement will be sent out.
