Dec.9, 2017 Meeting Minutes

December 9, 2017 Membership Meeting Minutes

The December Social Meeting of the NHKWVA was held at the Sweeney American Legion Post in Manchester commencing at 1 pm with 13 members and 7 guests present. With the upcoming snow storm it was an amicable attendance.

Those present enjoyed an excellent lunch of soup and chowder, sandwiches, salads, coffee and dessert.  The conversations and comradeship were abundant and enjoyable.  Jeanne Perreault organized and directed a fun bag game.

Following the social Commander Heidenreich called the meeting to order at 1:50 pm with pledge of allegiance and a remembrance of our past comrades.

The minutes of the previous were presented and accepted.

The financial report was presented indicating that at present for 2017 the expenses are      $1 074.99 with income of $2,049 (this is mostly from the Rose of Sharon and early 2018 dues) leaving the Chapter with $974.01 to the good. The report was accepted.

Membership:  Something has to be done about membership for only 41 members paid the $10 dues for 2017 with 26 remaining unpaid. So far there are 27 members who have sent in their 2018 dues.  Dues can be sent to NHKWVA, 177 Pako Ave., Keene, NH 03431.

It was moved, seconded and passed that the Chapter give the Sweeney Legion a $100 donation for allowing us to use their facilities.

The topic of The State Veterans Advisory Committee (SVAC), of which the Chapter is a member, was brought up. It was questioned if the Chapter should remain a member. Robert Desmond and Richard Moushegain spoke in favor of remaining. However, there is need for other member(s) to be the representative(s) on the board.

Bob and Dick also mentioned that they gave a presentation at the Plus Company.

Lionel Leblanc, while in rehab for an illness, presented an informational event about Pearl Harbor Day to some of the residents.

George Delorey mentioned that one day while grocery shopping someone, unknown to him, paid for his groceries in thanks for his service, a good sum.  He also indicated that he is tired of the VA for they keep rejecting his claim of his frozen feet from his service in Korea.

The next meeting will be the second Saturday in April, the 14th, at the Sweeney Legion Post.

The February meeting is cancelled because many of our members go to warmer climates in the winter and because of unforeseeable bad weather.

Thanks to Jeanne and Conrad Perreault and Alan Heidenreich for their efforts in preparing the event.

Meeting adjourned at 2:15 pm.

One of our comrades, Rose Connor-Allard, passes away on December 27, 2017. Thanks to Robert Desmond and Robert Courtemanche who represented the NHKWVA at the wake. Robert Courtemanche also attended the funeral.

Lionel LeBlanc, I believe, is still at the Bedford Hills Center, 30 Colby Ct., Bedford, NH 03110. Am sure he would appreciate visitors and/or correspondences.

Dick Zoerb will be displaying his models and speaking to the residents of the NH Veterans Home in Tilton on Wed. Jan. 24 at 10:30 am.  The public is invited to attend.

The NH Korean-American Society has notified us that they will be presenting a program commemorating the Korean War veterans of NH at the NH Veterans Cemetery on Sat., July 28th.   They will be presenting the Peace Medal Award to those who have not already received it at one of their prior events. Let me know so I can forward the Society your name as soon as possible.  You must be present at the event to receive it.

There is no meeting in February.  The next meeting will be on Sat., April 14th.

History and Membership info on the Chapter:

The first request to the National KWVA for information on starting an NH chapter was made in October 2010. With the information from National and articles in various NH newspapers the first meeting was held in February of 2011 with 20 in attendance.  On May 1 of 2011 the name of the Chapter and the bylaws were accepted and the final papers were sent to National and our Charter was received within a week.  We were now an official chapter of the KWVA with 57 chartered members.  Over the past 5 years our membership has been changing, yes we have lost a number of members and gained a few but we are slowly declining.  In 2014 there were 73 members, 2015 – 63, 2016 – 69, 2017 – 48 and so far this year 30.  According to the latest estimate, Sept. 2017, there are 8200 living NH Korean War Veterans and many Korean Defense Veterans.  Stay a member and help to recruit others.

Those of you who do not have e-mail sometime miss out on timely information.  If you have a family member or a friend with an email, they could relate the info to you.  Give me their e-mail address.  Mine is cjperreault@myfairpoint.net.

Addendum to August 2017 Minutes

Secretary/ Treasurer Addendum to August 2017 Minutes

The October 14th meeting will be held at the NH Veterans Home in Tilton.  The meeting is scheduled for 2 pm with snacks beginning at 1 pm.  A 1:30 pm tour of the facility will be available to all who wish to participate.  This is a great opportunity to find out about the Veterans Home.  Please try to attend and invite a family member to join you.

The staff would like to know approximately how many will be on the tour in order to have the appropriate number of volunteer guides available, so please contact me prior to Wednesday, Oct.11th if you plan to do so.   603-352-5369 (Home), 603-209-1278 (Cell) or cjperreault@myfairpoint.net     Thanks

I realize that I am starting early but our Chapter membership year goes from January 1 to December 31.  For some reason this year the Chapter did not fair too well on dues, only approximately 60% of our members submitted their payment. The National KWVA is not like some of the veteran organizations who collect for both National and local, for the KWVA dues are all theirs and the Chapters have to set and collect their own.  The Chapter would like to see all our members pay for 2018 even if you might have forgotten about 2017.  All is forgiven.  The dues are only $10, make a check out to NHKWVA and send it to NHKWVA, 177 Pako Ave., Keene, NH 03431.    The following have already submitted their dues for 2018: Paul Harris, Larry Sinclair, Robert Desmond, Terrence Connors, Rose Connors-Allard, Paul White, Palmer Porter, Roland Stoodley and Donald Buskey.

According to the National KWVA five of our members are in the inactive category.  Check your membership card for your anniversary date.  They should have been sending you notification.

Keep your memberships up and help to recruit new members.

All officers were present except for Jr. Vice Commander Richard Zoerb and Director Mike Lopez.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and accepted.

Financial Report: For the year to date the expenses are $536.99 with income of $1,386 giving $1,159.01 to the good.  Report accepted.

Discussion followed in regards to new members.  There are still many Korean War Veterans and many Korean Defense Veterans that we need to encourage joining.  The question arose in regards to joining the Chapter without joining the National Organization.  It was pointed out that in as much as we are chartered through National, that their bylaws and the Chapter’s bylaws state that our members must also be members of the National KWVA.

Rose of Sharon:  The Rose of Sharon fund raiser was held on July 15th at Market Basket in Nashua and July 22nd at the Bedford Market Basket with both being very successful, $615.55 at Nashua and $586 at Bedford. Addendum to June 2017 Minutes

Secretary/ Treasurer Addendum to June 2017 Minutes

In the June Minutes it was noted that the paid-up Chapter membership is at a very low percentage, where as last year at this time we were close to 100%.  If you have forgotten, write yourself a note to send in the $10 dues. If you have decided not to continue your membership let me know.  As has been previously mentioned someone has donated money to help those who are unable to continue in the National or the Chapter.  We do not want to lose you as a member.

The Korean-American Society’s program is at 3:30 pm Friday July, 28th.  I assume that there will be a lunch following the program.

Last year one of our members was requested to move from the shade to a sunnier place to accommodate someone else.  Believing that this event was a Chapter one he decided to leave the Chapter.  I must therefore point out, as in the past, that this is totally the Korean-American Society’s program with Chapter members acting only as their guest.

The Rose of Sharon fund raiser is our largest source of money and allows us to donate to places and organizations such as the Vets Home, Vetflix, Vets Count, etc… There is a need of help at our two locations: Nashua Market Basket on Saturday July 15th and the Bedford Market Basket on Saturday July 22nd.  If you could help in Nashua call Dick Moushegian at 603-888-2280.  As for Bedford, there is a need to cover 12 noon to 1 pm, 1pm to 2 pm and 2 pm to 3 pm.  Call Conrad at 603-352-5369.  At each location a table will be set up and chairs will be available.

As for the Honor Flight, when an application is submitted it is placed at the bottom of the pile and works its way to the top.  The applications do not just come from NH but other New England States as well.  Exceptions are those who may have a terminal illness they are moved to the top.  Have patience.

Our membership is not growing so if you know of anyone who has served in Korea, 1950 to the present day, or served outside of Korea from 1950 to Jan. 31, 1955, encourage them to join us.

I can be contacted at: 177 Pako Ave., Keene, NH 03431. Home: 603-352-5369, Cell 603-209-1278, email: cjperreault@myfairpoint.net

Minutes April 8, 1017

April 8, 2017 NHKWVA Membership Meeting Minutes

The meeting was held at the Sweeney American Legion Post in Manchester and was called to order at     2 pm by Commander Richard Moushegian.  Twelve members and 4 guests were present.

The pledge of allegiance was given followed by a moment of silence for our departed members William McCabe, Carter Procter and Gerald Holleran.

Bob Courtemanche talked about his attendance to the wake of William McCabe and stressed the importance that the Chapter be informed when any of our members passes so that we might pay our respects.

The minutes of the previous meeting were presented and accepted.

The financial report was given indicating that so far for the year 2017 the income has exceeded the expenses by $48.

Membership report: According to National we have 64 active and 6 inactive members.  As for the Chapter, there are only 29 paid members for 2017 (this is less than half). Send in your $10 dues to NHKWVA, 177 Pako Ave., Keene, NH 03431.  Also check on your National dues, your due date is on your National Membership card and on the mailing label of the Graybeards magazine.

Chapter name change: It was brought up and discussed that it would be beneficial that the Chapter undergo a name change and that the change be that of a person(s).  The suggestions were;

Donald Francis Van Den Berghe who was fatally wounded on July 23, 1953 and might just be the last causality of the war from New Hampshire.

Ralph C. Merrill who was fatally wounded on July 5, 1950 and is considered the first New Hampshire causality of the war

Merrill- Van Den Berghe a combination of the first and last battle fatalities.

It was the consensus of those present that the combination name would be a good possibility.  This will be voted on at the June 4th meeting and in as much as it requires a bylaws change the total membership needs to be notified through the minutes.

If you are unable to attend the meeting you may vote by contacting Conrad.  If we do not hear from you, it will be considered a positive vote.

Possible bylaws change: The bylaws state that the Commander and the two Vice Commanders can only serve two one year terms consecutively. This topic needs to be discussed.

Rose of Sharon: This year the Rose of Sharon distribution will take place on Saturday, July 15th or 22nd. It was recommended that we again request permission from Market Basket to set up at their stores at 375 Amherst Street in Nashua and 539 Donald Street, Bedford.  A letter will be sent to Market Basket.  Members will be needed to cover the two locations, one in Nashua and one in Bedford from 9 am to 3 pm. At least 6 members are needed at each location.

The next meeting of the NHKWVA is to be Sunday, June 4th at 2 pm at the Sweeney Legion Post in Manchester.  Election of officers for 2017-2018 will take place along with bylaws changes.

Election of officers: According to the Bylaws the election of officers is to take place in June.  In order for the Chapter to continue the positions need to be filled.  So far a tentative slate of officers for 2017-2018 is:

Commander: Alan Heidenreich

Sr. Vice Commander: Robert Desmond

Jr. Vice Commander: Richard Zoerb

Secretary/ Treasurer: Conrad Perreault

Directors:

                Immediate Past Commander- Richard Moushegian

Two Year Director – Robert Courtemanche

Two Year Director – James Slater

One Year Director – Open for the Secretary’s seat.

Directors Mike Lopez and Lionel Leblanc will be in their second year of directorship.

Vetflix: Commander Moushegian brought us up to date on the Vetflix project and the attempt to apply for grants.

Membership: A discussion took place in regard on how we might increase our membership, such as articles, luncheons, Facebook and word of mouth.

We also need to upgrade our membership application to make it smaller.

The possibility of other Korean War Welcome Home event(s) will be pursued.

Secretary/Treasurer Report 2016

Secretary/Treasurer Report for 2016

The Chapter is now into its second month of a new fiscal year and only a few have submitted Chapter dues for 2017.  Last year there were 69 paid members.  Our general expenses come from dues where as the charitable donations are covered from the monies collected from the Rose of Sharon fund drive in July.

A thank you goes to Joseph Merrill, Norm Cobb, Paul Harris, Richard Zoerb, Joseph Willette, James Spence, Fred Harvey, Jane Kirk, Mervyn Frink, Eugene Pawlik, Conrad Perreault, Marcel Couturier, Robert Courtemanche, John LeFrancois, James Slater, Lionel Leblanc, Robert Leister, Richard Moushegian, Ronald Russell, Henry Dessert and John Ekenbarger who have submitted their 1017 Chapter payment. To be added to this list send a check for $10 made out to NHKWVA and mail it to NHKWVA, 177 Pako Ave., Keene, NH 03431.

Each year on ones anniversary date of regular membership into the National KWVA he or she should have received a notice of payment of dues from the National Membership Committee.  This anniversary date is also found on your National Membership card and on your address label on the Graybeards.  This is a reminder to those members who are listed on the National Inactive List: Richard Angwin, Robert Brewster, Philip Dargie, Everett Delorey, Jorg Dreusicke, Roland Harmon, Gerald Holleran, David Staples and William Sturgeon. All that is needed is a check for $25 made out to KWVA with your membership number in the lower left hand side with the word dues and mail it to The Korean War Veterans Association, Inc., P.O. Box 407, Charleston, IL 61920-0407.

Financially, the Chapter was somewhat successful for the past year (2016) with the income exceeding the expenses by $423.51.  This is due to donations of $380 received from the membership over and above their dues. The Chapter was able to donate to the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery towards the new Education Center, Veterans Count, New Hampshire Veterans Home, Sweeney Legion Post and Vetflix.  The donations totaling $1050 came mostly from the Rose of Sharon fundraising which netted $973.35 after the expense of the flowers.  With the carryover from the previous years the Chapter is financially stable.  Also, the problem with the bank account has been resolver and it is safe.

This past year some members have been involved in a number of activities that has given recognition to the Chapter and Korean War and Defense Veterans.  The activities listed are only those that the Secretary is aware of. Repatriation ceremony in Bedford, NH, Honor Flight, Home Town Memorial Day Activities, Memorial Day at the NH Veterans Home, State Veterans Advisory Committee meetings, Vetflix meeting, Rose of Sharon Fundraiser, Veterans Day Ceremony at NH Veterans, hometown Veterans Day Activities, petition to have the bridge over the Connecticut River at Lebanon name for Korean War Veterans, etc..

Your participation and support to the NHKWVA is greatly appreciated and it is hoped that you will continue.  Come to the meetings and encourage other Korean War and Defense Veterans to join us.

Conrad Perreault

Secretary/Treasurer
